Hard To Find Films Films From the Silent era and up that you can't find anywhere else!
JACK THE RIPPER 1959 ALL 3 VERSIONS plus extras
Oh man...I'm not even sure where to begin here! Okay...many of us growing up in the 60's may remember this rather 'HAMMEResque' version of the Jack the Ripper story. It's easy to remember because this is the movie where the elevator crushes the man and his blood seeps up through the floorboards...remember? I certainly do :)
Anywho...there are 3 different versions of this film: the American version, the UK version and last, but not least...the Continental version.
Any one of these buggers is hard to track down. I've found all 3 and put them together in a 3-disc DVD set for ya (no need to thank me :).
The differences between the three are too numerous to go into here, but...I know some of ya are gonna be just a wee bit curious, so A discussion of the different versions can be found HERE.
Not that I expect any of you all to give a 'hoot', but my personal fave version is the Continental one. It's a very nice quality WIDESCREEN print and There are a few short "restored" scenes with French audio and English subtitles.
As for the plot...Suspenseful, interesting, and macabre, this period piece by Robert S. Baker overcomes a weakness in characterization by sheer dint of storyline and action. In this cinematic version, the murders are shown as they happened while Inspector O'Neill (Eddie Byrne), along with an American detective Sam Lowry (Lee Patterson) try to track down suspects and prevent the next killing. The theory put forward here is that Jack the Ripper was looking for one particular woman. As the tension mounts, his suggested identity -- and what happened to him -- is revealed.
All 3 are very nice prints and I've thrown in some Ripper related documentaries and such because, well...because I'm just a heck of a guy...that's why :)
