Hard To Find Films Films From the Silent era and up that you can't find anywhere else!
GUILTY AS HELL 'Columbo-like' murder mystery 1932
"Guilty As Hell" was retitled "Guilty As Charged" in the UK. It's one
of the many early films that now
languish in limbo; neither receiving television exposure nor a home
video release. It was also one of the many popular Lowe/McLaglen
'buddy' pictures and their chemistry was never better than in this
film. The story was somewhat unconventional at the time for a mystery
as the murderer is identified to the audience in the very first scene.
He is shown committing the murder of his faithless wife while framing
her lover at the same time. It truly seems like the perfect crime.
Comparisons to the tv program "Columbo" are apt as it would use the
same format years later. Although the identity of the murderer is known
from the offset, the film is still able to deliver a plot twist, albeit
a humourous one, at the end.
What truly makes this film special, though, is the direction of Erle C.
Kenton who is probably best known for his direction of the classic
"Island of Lost Souls" (as well as several latter Universal horrors).
Kenton makes interesting use of the camera with novel and exciting
edits and camera shots that raise this film head and shoulders above
the typical mystery/crime fare of the period and make for great movie
viewing.
Very nice quality print.
