Count Dracula UNCUT Franco version with extras 1970
A highly atmospheric adaptation of the classic Bram Stoker novel, directed with panache by auteur Jess Franco. Screen-icon Christopher Lee (Horror of Dracula, Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Rings) portrays the titular Count Dracula, who flees the cold confines of his Carpathian castle for the shores of England, where he must feed on the blood of beautiful Lucy (Soledad Miranda, Vampyros Lesbos) and Mina (Maria Rohm, 99 Women) in order to grow youthful and stay alive.
Also featuring excellent performances by Herbert Lom (The Ladykillers) as Van Helsing and Klaus Kinski (Nosferatu & Nosferatu in Venice) as Renfield, as well as an ominous score by Bruno Nicolai (Eugenie de Sade, The Night Evelyn Came Out of the Grave).
This special UNCUT release includes BOTH missing bits from the US release, which are:
1 - Opening credits. Apparently the US release used an Italian print from Rome, so the opening credits are mainly Italian (title is in French, though - “Les Nuits De Dracula”). The US release is missing approx. 17 seconds from the start of the film, mainly establishment panning shot from the forest with the birds singing in the background. It´s also missing the introduction-text card, as well as the text “Transylvania 1897”. The US release print starts from the “Alexander H. Cohen Presenta”-credit in the black background and then cuts roughly to the middle of the first zoom (to the one towers of the castle).
2 - Gypsy woman. This is the scene that can make the difference for some people and again, it's missing from the US release. The missing bit in question happens after the scene, when Jonathan Harker notices that he´s being locked-up in his room and is being harassed by the bat. After he becomes unconscious, there´s a close-up of the candle and the following missing scene lasting approx. 53 seconds; A Gypsy woman arrives at the castle, crying and begging for the return of her baby.
** This special UNCUT release also features the highly-sought-after film made in conjunction with Franco's COUNT DRACULA...Cuadecuc, Vampir.
Noted Catalonia surrealist Pedro Portobella shot this short subject on the set of Jess Franco's EL CONDE DRACULA.
Though often thought of as a documentary on the making of COUNT DRACULA. This is considered by many as a stand-alone work of cinema art...not a 'horror' film.
The Portobella film is shot silent; until the end, in the film's only use of sync sound, when Lee reads a climactic passage from Bram Stoker's novel.
