A personal fave of yours'
truly. This Oscar-winning political melodrama stars Gian Maria Volonte
in the title role. As the audience watches dumbstruck, Volonte calmly
cuts his mistress' throat. With equal clear-headedness, he plants
evidence that will clear him of suspicion. Even when the police are
certain that they know the murderer's identity, Volonte's status in the
community saves him from immediate arrest. Elio Petri's own
anti-establishment stance was never more pronounced than in this film,
wherein the truth is whatever the Ruling Class chooses to acknowledge.
The original Italian title of Investigation of a Citizen Above
Suspicion was Indagine su un Cittadino al di Sopra di Ogna Sospetto.
