'29 Madison WI Orpheum Theatre Vaudeville Wallpaper
This is an unusual handbill from 1929 for the New Orpheum Theatre in Madison, WIsconsin (see my other auctions for a couple programs from the theatre) The handbill is printed to look like a piece of wallpaper and the headline at the top reads "They're Tearing off the Paper Off the Walls of the New Orpheum to See this Knockout Program". This handbill measures 6-1/4" x 10". Acts on the bill were: America's Favorite Mimic Miss Juliet, Joe Marks with Mal Leonard and George Brown, the Norman Thomas Quintette (which I believe was an African American band that appeared in the 1929 film " Harlem Mania "). On the screen was "A Single Man" with Lew Cody and Aileen Pringle (which was released in 1929). At the bottom it states "Wallpaper courtesy of Madison Paint & Varnish Co. - The Craftsman Press, 137 West Johnson Street". This is not dated, but based on the movie being shown, this would be from 1929. No city is listed, but since I got this in a group with a couple Orpheum programs from Madison, Wisconsin and since the name of the "courtesy of" was Madison Paint, I can safely say that this is from Madison, Wisconsin. (Plus the address for Craftsman Press does exist in Madison.) On the reverse side it says "Ask your nearest paint dealer to show you this popular line of... Wall Paper". The flyer is in good condition - it is yellowed with age - there is a very small piece gone from the lower right corner tip - there is a 3/4" tear at the bottom - there is a 1/4" tear along the right edge - there are a couple other minor tears including one in the lower left tip of the corner - there is a crease in the lower right hand corner - there is a crease in the upper left hand corner. AN UNUSUAL VAUDEVILLE PROMOTIONAL DEVICE! Postage is $4.00.
