40s Steamship Avalon Catalina Island Photos Female Crew
These are three old original snapshots taken by someone, based on other photos in the group I would estimate the 1940s. Each photo measures 2-1/2" x 3-1/2". One of the photos has a La Crosse, Wisc photo company stamp on the back, but I believe that is where the person who took them lived. Doing some research on the steamship shown, The SS Avalon name is visible on the front of the ship in one photo and on the lifeboats in the background on another. I was able to find a book on the internet "Cataline by Sea" and found a picture of the crew from the Avalon that operated around Catalina Island in California until 1951 and one of the female crew is wearing the same uniform as the women in two of these photos. (I found out that the women were not actual crew, had no nautical duties, but that they were couriers that acted as a messenger service between the island and the mainland.) The first photo shows a man surrounded by three of the female employees (one other crew member is on the left and only partially visible). Maybe they hired tall women as employees, or this guy is just short. I would guess that this man may be the person whose camera it was (or his friend) and wanted his picture taken with these nicely dressed employees. The second photo shows the four employees standing on the dock in front of the ship. The third photo shows the Avalon docked. The photos are in good condition - they are a little curled, but flatten under plastic or a frame. A NICE SET OF PHOTOS FOR A CATALINA ISLAND / SS AVALON FAN! Postage is $2.50.
