1987 Jane Byrne Dewey Defeats Truman Chicago Jack Higgins Orig Editorial Cartoon
This is the original artwork by Jack Higgins for his Chicago Sun-Times editorial cartoon dated 1987. The artwork shows Jane Byrne holding up a Chicago newspaper with the iconic "Dewey Defeats Truman" mistake headline. In February, 1987 former Chicago mayor ran against incumbent Mayor Harold Washington in the primary. Harold Washington won and later would be elected to his second term as mayor. Polls showed Mayor Washington was ahead of Byrne but as the votes were counted Byrne was closer than expected, so maybe this cartoon may have come out a couple of days before the primary? (Or maybe just after?) The artwork measures approx. 12-1/2" x 17-1/2". This is the original artwork that Jack Higgins created. The artwork is in good condition - there are a few small marks/smudges/light dirt on the art - there is some small creasing in the corners - on the back there are some editor notes and some light dirt. A NICE, ONE-OF-A-KIND PIECE OF EDITORIAL ARTWORK THAT WOULD LOOK GREAT FRAMED! When packed, this will ship at the 2 pound rate - check the postage calculator. Jack Higgins has worked at the Chicago Sun-Times for over 35 years and won a Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning in 1989. Check out my other listings for a few other cartoons by Jack Higgins.
