1981 Jack Higgins Editorial Cartoon Art Chicago School Board Desegregation Plan
This is the original artwork by Jack Higgins for his Chicago Sun-Times editorial cartoon dated 1981. The artwork says "Desegregation Plan Deadline" with April 29th on the wall calendar - March 11 and April 15 calendar pages are in the waste basket. The man reaching for the April 29 sheet is labeled "School Board". In 1980 the U.S. Supreme Court had a desegregation lawsuit against the Chicago School Board on its calendar. On October 21, 1980 the Supreme Court dropped the case from its calendar when the Chicago School Board successfully argued that it wasn't necessary since the Board had signed a consent degree requiring it to adopt a desegregation plan by March 11, 1981. On April 15, 1981 the Chicago School Board voted down their own consultant's desegregation plan. The Judge have them until April 29, 1981 to submit a plan. (A plan was approved on April 30, 1981). The artwork measures approx. 11-3/8" x 17-1/2". This is the original artwork that Jack Higgins created. The artwork is in good condition - the artwork has some touch ups by the artist in the caption where it looks like the first draft was "Mandatory Busing Plan" - there is some light dirt on the edges - there are some editor notes on the bottom edge - there is a small mark near the bottom edge about an inch below the end of the legs of the man - on the back there is some discoloration from transfer of ink from artwork stored against the piece - there are a few small marks/smudges on the art. A NICE, ONE-OF-A-KIND PIECE OF EDITORIAL ARTWORK THAT WOULD LOOK GREAT FRAMED! When packed, this will ship at the 2 pound rate - check the postage calculator. Jack Higgins has worked at the Chicago Sun-Times for over 35 years and won a Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning in 1989. Check out my other listings for a few other cartoons by Jack Higgins.
