The focus in the Initiate level is your development in life, the actions necessary to develop your inner power, the reframing of the pain/pleasure principle, and the balancing of the four elements in your personality so that you have the greatest power of choice over your actions. You are introduced to the æthyr through visualization, astral projection and communicating with your inner teacher, or inner sage. These programs are about getting the mind used to looking inward. They will teach you to enter the altered state of consciousness, and how to work in that state. These programs help you to refine your skills at visualizing and experiencing your internal world. They will also help you to organize your inner world into a functional inner temple for changing reality.

THE POWER OF GOALS

The first necessary step to succeeding at anything, whether spiritually or in any other area of your life, is to set goals for what you want to accomplish. In this program you will examine your goals so that you can beginm to get a clear understanding of where you are going in life.

POWER VISUALIZATION

Visualization is an essential tool in all of magick and spiritual work, particularly in the New Hermetics. For anyone who has trouble with visualization or just wants to improve their skills this program offers an opportunity to expand and develop your abilities to sense things on the inner planes. You will practice the art of visualization as well as learning to smell, taste, hear and feel more vividly in your inner world.

NEW HERMETICS GROUNDING AND CENTERING

In this program you will learn the visualization tool that begins and ends most New Hermetics work. This tool is based loosely upon the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. The formula is the same, but the sectarian words of power have been replaced with modern archetypal equivalents. The ritual has been reduced to a simple set of mental maneuvers so that it can be conducted quickly, entirely in your inner temple. Its purpose is to ground us within the inner temple, and to awaken the elemental quadrants, with us at the center. Most of the work that we'll conduct involves one or more quadrants of the inner temple, and this tool simply allows us to quickly and easily get into the right space to do so.

THE FOUR ELEMENTS

This program introduces us to working with the four ancient elements (fire, water, air and earth) within the inner temple. By using this program along with the exercises in your Initiate Workbook you will take a look at your behaviors and habitual characteristics in such a way that you can see where your imbalances lie. In medieval times, these character traits were called the four humors: the Phlegmatic, the Sanguine, the Melancholic and the Choleric. The lists of characteristics provided are really just intended to be jumping off points so that you can see how to analyze yourself, but you will need to think about your own idiosyncratic tendencies as well. You will later learn a simple method for addressing these imbalances and returning yourself to a healthy state of equilibrium and free choice. In order to succeed in the New Hermetics it is necessary to balance your personality so that you are capable of expressing all of the positive traits of each element and are not obsessed by any of the negative ones.

BALANCING THE ELEMENTS

With this program you will be able to move away from negative elemental character traits and instead to manifest new positive traits. Once you have taken a look at your imbalances, you can seek to create new possibilities within your inner temple using this tool. All behaviors have a useful purpose in some context, so this tool does not seek to eliminate any character trait, but rather open the door to new possible behaviors so that we have greater choice over our actions and character. This tool will allow you to change the way you react to any situation in your life however you may like.

THE POWER OF EARTH: TURNING PAIN INTO PLEASURE

This program is for dealing with and gaining some mastery over the first bio-circuit of the Leary model, helping to turn actions and experiences that seem unpleasant or scary into pleasurable or at least neutral experiences. There are experiences in life that we find painful or difficult to deal with. We may retreat from taking action in various parts of our lives because of these pain signals that we receive. These pain signals can be totally crippling. However, you can consciously take control of your internal pain and pleasure signals with the use of the following tool.

ASTRAL TRAVELING

With this program you will go through the steps of leaving your body and traveling around outside of it. By repeatedly performing this practice you will discover that in fact you are really leaving your body into the subtle planes. For most of the New Hermetics techniques this tool is unnecessary because you will begin in your Inner Temple, but this program may be helpful to you in exploring the true potentialities of your consciousness.

MEETING WITH YOUR INNER TEACHER

The purpose of this tool is to provide you with a powerful internal resource for giving you advice on any subject, helping you to understand your internal experiences and assisting you to remove blocks and end conflicts inside your own inner temple. While this program might seem at first glance to be a bit "new agey, " it can be an extremely powerful method for obtaining assistance and guidance from our unconscious. The inner teacher is a projection in our minds of the Daemon, Holy Guardian Angel or Higher Genius. Although there is no obvious connection between this tool and Ancient Alexandria, every essential element of it is nearly identical to several methods for obtaining an "agathodaemon" that can be found in the magical papyri.

Jason Augustus Newcomb has been studying and working with the powers of the mind for nearly twenty years and is the author of the books "21st Century Mage" and "The New Hermetics." He is a lifelong student of the Western Mystery Tradition. He has studied consciousness and esoteric spirituality for most of his life.
