This is a auction of a original first printing of the poster created to promote a concert / dance presented by the Family Dog at the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco on May 26th , 1967 for THE STEVE MILLER BLUES BAND and BIG BROTHER AND THE HOLDING COMPANY. It is 14 by 23 inches in size but has been linenbacked so incluiding this it is apprx. 16 by 25 inches and is in very fine condition. The artwork for this poster was done by BONNIE MACLEAN . THIS POSTER RETAILS FOR $185 IN MINT CONDITION. BACKGROUND INFO ON BIG BROTHER AND THE HOLDING COMPANY - A group of the late sixties, Big Brother and the Holding Company peaked in popularity in 1968. The strength of the band was in its musicality as it supported the enormous talent of Janis Joplin. Although Grace Slick was the first female singer to be highly successful with a rock band (at least in the white tradition), Joplin is felt by some critics to be more important. At the Monterey Festival in 1967, she brought down the house because she was so strong, sexual and unique. Her singing style was straight from the rhythm and blues tradition; before joining Big Brother, she was a powerhouse blues singer. Her singing style was gutsy, using groans and a raspy voice, and she made you feel the pain she was going through. One of the most powerful performers of the rock era, Joplin served as a model for other women in rock and roll. She dumped Big Brother in 1968 and assembled the Kosmic Blues Band, followed by the Full-Tilt Boogie Band in 1970. Hugely talented but tortured and insecure, Joplin died of a heroin overdose in 1970. Big Brother, active before Joplin joined them and after she left, was the house band at the Avalon Ballroom and played a progressive style of instrumental rock through the era. BACKGROUND INFO ON THE STEVE MILLER BLUES BAND - In his long career, Steve Miller has gone from being one of the first young white West Coast blues-rockers to being one of the biggest-selling pop-rock artists of the seventies and eighties. In 1966, Miller (who was taught guitar at age five by Les Paul) moved to California and formed the Steve Miller Blues Band. The band played at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 and backed up Chuck Berry at the Fillmore. They took the unusual step for a San Francisco band of traveling to London in 1968 to record their first album, Children of the Future. The band had a communal house in San Francisco and rock pro Miller was challenged by the musical scene of which he was a part. The band went on to have a number of top hits in the 1970s, including "Fly Like an Eagle," "Rock 'n Me," and "Take the Money and Run."
