1800s VICTORIAN? HEART SHAPED REPOUSSE SILVER BOX
The following listing is for a lovely heart shaped silver box. The box has a repousse design with floral and mushroom shapes. The repousse work is wonderful. The center of the heart shaped lid has a nearly oval ornate frame for an inscription or initials. The hinged lid is very strong and sturdy and closes tightly in line with the bottom part. The box and lid have a crimped or scalloped edging or skirt which is very decorative. The interior is gold washed. The box has hallmarks in two places (the interior bottom of the box and on the inside rim of the top), the hallmarks being a lion, anchor, and the letter 'C'. It is signed M. BROS. I found a nearly identical box (which sold for about $280) that was attributed to Birmingham 1891, but the hallmarks on that box were not described nor could I see them in the photo, so I can't say this is the same maker, but M. BROS. was associated with Birmingham. With just slight design and size differences though, the two are practically twins. It's in great condition with patina appropriate to age, and some expected scratching on the bottom. It could be polished if you prefer, but I leave that choice to the buyer. It measures approximately 1 5/8" by 1 5/8" by 7/8" high. Wonderful little treasure!!
