I get many questions and see misstatements about ”The Signature in the Image.”
Examples:
I was to understand that all the original woodcuts were signed in the block.
Some advertise the woodblock print as Signed that have the block signature.
From Page 189 of “The Official Catalog of The Graphic Works of Salvador Dali”
By Mr. Albert Field it reads: The book was published in Paris by two editors in six volumes with a full text in French in three sets of two volumes each.1960-1962-1964. The prints are about 25 x 18 cm on paper 34 x 25 cm, with no signatures within the images (except for Inferno #1, Which has a printed black signature.)
Later on page 191 it states: After the printing of the book editions was complete, a boxed signature in color was printed within the image of each print (except two).
Here’s the proof that Mr. Field is correct, that all the prints with a box signature were printed after the limited book editions. In the French Edition there were 4765 suites. That’s a lot of wear on the woodblocks before the box signature prints were printed. After the book editions were finished Les Heures Claires continued an unlimited run of The Divine Comedy with box signatures.
THE PROOF:
After looking at boxed-signed prints I noticed prints with backing paper that I had not seen backed in the French edition. Backing paper was used when too much pressure is used to print or too many woodblocks took their toll on the paper. So I examined French Editions 25, 395 and 4138 for prints with backing paper. The only prints I could find with backing paper were from ENEFER #’s 4, 7, 11, 16, 20 and 33. That’s it; Out of a hundred prints only 6 had backing paper, even after 4138 suite’s. The boxed-signed prints are an unlimited run and as the woodblocks wore down it took more pressure to print them, therefore the need for backing paper. Also prints with the box signature were printed in an unlimited edition. That’s why you see them for sale on Cruise Ships and EBay, they out number the prints without the box signature for sale.
So the answer is the prints in The French Edition are the First Edition Prints and the prints with the block signature were printed after the French Edition.
The prints with Block Signatures were not signed by Dali, but rather a woodblock engraving of Dali’s signature was added to prints after the French Edition.
Watch out some unscrupulous Art Dealers sell the unlimited prints out of a book and then replace them with the blocked signed prints. There is even a Rare Book Dealer that has a Divine Comedy with text less prints for sale at this time. That’s why I’m selling these prints with the original Text and a copy of the Tirage page. The best proof I have short of prints I sell with Mr. Fields certification of authenticity
I hope this clears up a lot of misconceptions about Block Signatures
These works have sold in galleries for $1,200 to $2,000.
This is a rare bargain!!!

I suggest that collectors acquire at least one image from each level of Dante's journey (Inferno, Purgatory and Paradise) for a complete representation of the journey. This also makes a proper triptych and a powerful presentation.
