Antique Montana Indian brain tanned deerskin Doll 1860s
Very old Montana Native American Indian Buckskin Doll 1860's
This doll was from the estate of a very old Montana Family that located in Cottonwood City (Deerlodge) in the 1860's. The doll is completely hand sewn from buckskin. It measures 5 1/2 inches high. The body is a bundle of buckskin with some type of wire legs and arms also covered with buckskin and cloth. The fringed leggings, moccasins, and fringed shirt are also hand sewn and form fitting, very finely done. The head is also made from the same material as the body and the collar of the fringed shirt comes tightly around the neck. The hair looks like human hair and is delicately braided with buckskin ties at the bottom of the braids. The buckskin is still supple and quite clean. The stitching is done with cotton thread and not sinew. The man I got this from was 97 years old and he couldn't remember if it was his sister's or his mother's but either way it is over 100 years old. Judging from the style and quailty I think it is from the 1860's or 1970's and was an Indian Trade Doll made by the Indians in Montana and exchanged as a gift. Most of the male residents of Deerlodge were white but most of their wives were Indian so it could be made by one of them also.
