Took over the starting quarterback job in the fifth game of the year and had an 8-4 record as the starter. Established a Club record with his 68.9 completion percentage, and led the NFL with his 104.2 passer rating, also a team record. Played in 15 games on the year, totaling 275 completions on 399 attempts for 3,120 yards with 22 TD and six INT.
Had an outstanding postseason debut, completing 19 of 25 (76.0%) passes for 222 yards with three TD and no INT, good for a team postseason record rating of 142.0 in New York's 41-0 win over the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC Wild Card playoff game.
Turned in a brilliant performance in the division clinching 42-17 win over Green Bay in game 16, completing 17 of 24 (70.8%) passes for 196 yards, tying a career best four TD passes with no INT, to set a new individual best with a passer rating of 134.7. Was named AFC Offensive Player of the Week for his performance against the Packers, his second consecutive and third POW honor of the season.
Recorded his first career win against the Minnesota Vikings in game six, 20-7, completing 24 of 29 passes for 324 yards with a TD and no INT. His 82.8% completion percentage set a new franchise best for the New York Jets organization.
Set an NFL record for completion percentage over his first three starts (65-84, .774 pct.).
Was voted the team’s Most Valuable Player by his teammates and also won the Kyle Clifton Good Guy Award as voted by the members of the Jets’ staff.
