RARE ORIGINAL "HAIR WORK" INSTRUCTIONS with 29 steel plate etchings!
This SCARCE
instructional information was put to paper by experienced morning jewelry
artists from the early to pre-Victorian era. This information was originally
published in 1877! (Original source is NOT for sale)
This HISTORIC item contains etchings, instructions,
diagrams, designs and fundamentals for creating a variety of hair-work jewelry
art items. This is not braided "table work" but "cutwork or palette
work." There are etchings for 29 hair and bead ANTIQUE designs with instructions
included for brooches and lockets! Larger versions of this work was also framed
under glass for wall decorations or tabletop displays. This type of original
information is seldom found on eBay or elsewhere! It is amazing that such a
simple, beautiful and sentimentally wonderful art (which was practiced from
the 1600's through the late 1800's) was so broadly neglected in being
placed the written word! I was fortunate enough in my bibliomaniacal
searching to run across this rarified gem and am sharing with those who love the
old arts as much as I!!!
These instructions are characteristic of the crafts done by
our lady ancestors! During its heyday hairwork was not just for remembering and
commemorating your loved-one's passing. Hair jewelry was made for the
commemoration of many special occassions such as first haircuts, in lieu of
photographs, and even in specially designed post cards and Valentines
Day cards...
This is the perfect opportunity to purchase your own
version of another wonderful original item revealing our heritage from early
America and European! And if you are interested in more regarding this almost
dead art you might do an online search for the "Hair Art International
Restorers." This is, as far as I have been able to research it,
the first hair-work "Society" in America. I believe these folks could be a
wonderful resorce in gaining more information regarding this lovely, lovely art
for those of you who are interested...
What a historically educational and delightful art
instructional piece this is!
A few
quotes:
"As the hair is the only part of our beloved friends which can be kept in
memoriam, it is natural that we should desire to preserve the treasure in some
way that will testify our appreciation of its value, and when this can be done
in a manner that is both pleasing to the taste and that will insure its
prolonged or lasting preservation, it becomes a work which all may desire to be
able to successfully practice…The ability to so arrange and secure each strand
of the sacred treasure, becomes an accomplishment truly valuable, and worthy all
the patience and skill required in its performance."
"The smoothness and regularity of hair-work is its greatest
beauty, and there is no branch of fancy work which requires so few rules, or
which may be so readily acquired by practice. A dexterous use of the fingers,
neatness of finish, and that skill in manipulating, called "nimble fingering,"
are the great requisites in forming perfect leaves and flowers of hair."
"Take nature for your guide, and with hair of various
colors and lengths, you will be able to form almost any flower you desire." What
a historically educational and delightful art instructional piece this is!
