An excerpt from our scarce and fragile
original:
"Transferring designs
are now
universally known, and the process is acknowledged to be the most perfect,
simple, and expeditious manner of Tracing Designs for all kinds of Embroidery.
One of the great recommendations of these Transferring Papers is that they
enable Ladies to trace upon their own Material ; this being much less expensive
than purchasing ready-traced Articles."
A Bit of Information Regarding the "Genuine Victorian Symbolism" of These
Designs
Victorians used flowers to communicate their
personal and societal sentiments on a daily basis. In particular,
Victorian WOMEN used flowers
to secretly communicate to their lovers! Very romantic!!! The use of floral
symbolism became so popular during the 1800's that most every know flower carried
a sentimental meaning. These meanings were naturally attached to these embroidery
designs and shared via personally handmade gifts. Each meaning has been
included below each of this set's designs and can be read about
below!

A Bit
More Regarding Victorian Symbolism:
Floriography (the assigning of meanings to
flowers), were elaborately utilized by Victorian women in order to express
their feelings within the strict etiquette bounderies of the time. Flowers provided them
a silent, but communictive, language which allowed them to present their
sentiments to others even though cultural propriety and taboos forbade this.
Furthermore, the scents of these particular plants, in sachets, scented
handkerchiefs, etc., carried the same messages.
This is not the
end of this complicated nonverbal Victorian language! Not only did the flower
itself sent a clear message but its color and the manner in which
the flowers were worn or presented did also. If the flowers were presented
upright signified a positive meaning. However, when presented upside down, it
meant the opposite! If the ribbon bow encircling the bouquet was tied to the
left it meant the symbolic meaning referred to the giver; if the bow was on the
right meant it referred to the reciever.
Flowers were
also used to answer questions from one's lover or a hopeful paramour! If the
bouquet was handed to the gent or lady with the right hand, the answer was
"Yes"; with the left hand "No"!
I am sure there
are more meanings that I am as yet unaware of but I hope you enjoyed this
information as much as I!
