Maps No. 44 (Empire d'Alexandre). Engraved by Marlier.
This authentic map of Asia Minor, Armenia, Caucasus,
Middle East, Persia, Afghanistan,
Pakistan, and western India shows Alexander's Empire.
Major regions, provinces, tribes, kingdoms, towns,
rivers, and lakes are indicated, together with the routes of
Alexander (shown by thin solid lines).
Alexander the Great (b. 356 BC, Pella, Macedonia
d. June 13, 323 BC, Babylon)
was a king of Macedonia. He overthrew the Persian Empire, carried Macedonian arms to India, and
laid the foundations for the Hellenistic world of territorial kingdoms.
The satrapies of the Empire, including Armenie (Armenia), Parthia, Media, Gedrosia,
Bactria, India, Egypt, and Syria (with Palestine),
are indicated on the map.
The Kingdom of Porus (Royaume de Porus) is shown.
Porus was the rajah of the lands between the Jhelum and the Chenab rivers in
the Punjab. In July 326 B.C.,
Alexander's army crossed the heavily defended Hydaspes
river in dramatic fashion during a violent thunderstorm to meet Porus' forces. The Indians were
defeated in a fierce battle, even though they fought with elephants, which the Macedonians had
never before seen. Alexander captured Porus and, like the other local rulers he had defeated,
allowed him to continue to govern his territory. Alexander even subdued an independent province
and granted it to Porus as a gift.
The map is a magnificent document and a treat for history buffs.
