by A. Vuillemin
"Suede et Norwege"
Sweden, Norway, Denmark,
Iceland, and the Faroes
Hand Colored Outline
Alexandre Vuillemin (1812-1880), a student of Auguste Henri Dufour (1798-1865),
was a cartographer and publisher based in Paris.
The map appeared in his "Atlas Universel de Géographe Ancienne et Moderne"
published 1848 in Paris by J. Langlumé, Rue des Poitevins, 2.
Map No. 16, engraved by Lale.
This superb authentic map of Scandinavia
shows detail of the interior and coastal line, including states,
provinces, cities,
rivers, mountans, etc.
Iceland and the Faroes are shown in the insets. Finland and the Baltics are also
depicted, but with less detail.
The map is a magnificent document and a treat for history buffs.

Schleswig became a Danish
duchy in the 12th century and remained a fief
associated with Denmark until it was forcibly annexed by Prussia and incorporated with
Holstein as a single Prussian province in 1866.
Holstein was created as a county of the Holy Roman
Empire in 1111. It came under a personal union with the Danish king in 1459, an
arrangement which caused much unrest among the German majority. In 1474 Holstein
was raised to the rank of a duchy in the Holy Roman Empire and after 1815 in the
German Confederation. Attempts by Denmark to annex Holstein and Schleswig led to
war with Austria and Prussia in 1864. Denmark was defeated and, as a result, Holstein
was annexed by Prussia and incorporated with Schleswig as a single Prussian province
by the Peace of Prague (1866).
Lauenburg is also depicted as a part of Denmark.
In 1728 Lauenburg became attached to Hanover. The Congress of Vienna (1814-15) awarded
it to Prussia, which granted it to Denmark in exchange for the previously
Swedish part of Pomerania. After the Danish-Prussian War of 1864, Lauenburg
was returned to Prussia.
Engraving measures 10 1/4" x 7 3/4" on 12 1/4" x 10" sheet. Hand colored outline.
Decorative border
and elegant cartouche.
The map is in good
condition. Imperfections:
uniform age toning and browning.
Will look great with a mat and frame.
