1851 View of Girard College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by
John Poppel/Joseph Meyer
"GIRARD-COLLEGE in PHILADELPHIA"
This beautiful steel engraving appeared in "Meyer's Universum"
by Joseph Meyer (1796-1856), published in Hildburghausen (Germany) by the
Bibliographischen
Instituts 1851. Engraved by John Poppel.
Bibliographischen
Instituts was created in 1826 by Joseph Meyer.
From 1833 to 1864, Joseph Meyer issued a
journal, Meyer's Universum, containing text and steel engravings of all
parts of the world. Some of those engravings appeared in
the 52-volume
"Conversations Lexicon" (1840 - 1855).
The Institute also issued
"Meyer's Travel Guide"
and many editions of "Meyer's
Atlas". In 1874, the Institute was moved to Leipzig. For more details concerning
Meyer's monumental work, see Angelika Marsch, "Meyer's Universum.
Ein Beitrag zur Geschichte de Stahlstiches und des Verlagswesens im 19.
Jahrhundert." Lüneburg 1972.
This beautiful authentic steel engraving shows
Girard College in Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania. The College was founded in 1833 by Stephen
Girard, a French immigrant, American financier, and philanthropist who
bequeathed nearly his entire fortune to social welfare institutions.
The money he left to create Girard College for male orphans
was the largest private
charitable donation up to that time in American history.
The engraving depicts
Founder's Hall, completed 1848 and designed by architect Thomas U. Walter,
one of America's greatest Greek Revival buildings.
(See the
Girard College webpage ).

Engraved area is 4 1/4" x 6 1/4" on 5 3/4" x 9 1/4" sheet. Wide margins.
The condition is
very good.
Imperfections: several faint
wrinkles in the right margin; small chip in the upper right corner - very far
from the engraved area.
Will look great with a mat and frame.
