1846/1874 Map of Egypt Palestine Suez Canal
1846/1874 Map of Egypt and Palestine by Duvotenay/Dyonnet
"Égypte et Syrie"
One inset: The Suez Canal
This original
steel etching by Ch. Dyonnet after the drawing by Th. Duvotenay
originally appeared as text
illustration in M.A. Thiers's "Histoire de la Revolution
Francaise" (Paris, Furne et Cie 1846). The map was reprinted for
"Atlas Geographie Militaire", Adopte Par. M. Le Ministre De La
Guerre Pour L'Ecole Speciale Militaire De Saint-Cyr, by Colonel
Edmond Bureau. Printed in
Paris by Furne, the publisher Thier's atlas,
Jouvet et Cie, Libraires-Éditeurs, 45 Rue
Saint-André-des-Arts, MDCCCLXXIV (1874).
Bureau was a
professor of history, geography, and military statistics at the
military academy
at Saint-Cyr. Bureau's atlas was a revision of the similar atlas by Theophile
Lavallee. Both atlased used the original plates engraved
by Dyonnet.
This superb authentic map of Egypt and Syria
(present-day Egypt, Israel, Palestine, Lebanon, and Jordan)
clearly show details of the
interior and coastal line, including provinces, towns, rivers,
mountains, oases, routes, etc. The map was updated by
adding the inset of the Suez Canal that was
pasted onto the map.
The map is a magnificent
document and a treat
for history buffs. See pictures for more details; click image to view

In 1854 Ferdinand de Lesseps received an Act of Concession from the
viceroy of Egypt, Sa'id Pasha, to construct a canal; and in
1856 a second act conferred on the Suez Canal Company
the right to operate a maritime
canal for 99 years after completion of the work. Construction began in
1859 and took 10 years instead of the 6 that had been envisaged. In
August 1869 the waterway was completed, and it was officially opened
with an elaborate ceremony in November.
Engraving measures 8" x 12" on 10 3/4" x 17" sheet.
Printed on strong quality paper. Wide margins.
The map is in very good condition. Strong impression.
Imperfections: one water stain in right margin (far from image; can be covered or trimmed).
Will look great with a mat and frame.
