1874 Large Map of North America Oddities!
1874 Large Map of North and Central
America
"Amérique Septentrionale"
Color, Double Folio
Shows Nonexistent Islands in the Pacific
This original
steel etching, probably by Ch. Dyonnet after the drawing by Th. Duvotenay,
originally appeared as text
illustration in M.A. Thiers's "Histoire de la Revolution
Francaise" (Paris, Furne et Cie 1846). The map was reprinted for
"Atlas Geographie Militaire", Adopte Par. M. Le Ministre De La
Guerre Pour L'Ecole Speciale Militaire De Saint-Cyr, by Colonel
Edmond Bureau. Printed in
Paris by Furne, the publisher Thier's atlas,
Jouvet et Cie, Libraires-Éditeurs, 45 Rue
Saint-André-des-Arts, MDCCCLXXIV (1874).
Bureau was a
professor of history, geography, and military statistics at the
military academy
at Saint-Cyr. Bureau's atlas was a revision of the similar atlas by Theophile
Lavallee. Both atlased used the original plates engraved
by Dyonnet.
This fascinating authentic double folio map of North America
(the United States, British America, Russian America, Greenland,
Mexico, Central America,
and West Indies)
shows major rejons, provinces, states,
cities, rivers, lakes, mountain chains, and Indian tribes.
Below given are some interesting details related to the
map's content.
-
Large Oregon
extends all the way to the Rocky Mountains
-
Huge
California covers
the present-day Nevada and part of Arizona.
-
New Mexico
covers present-day Arizona.
-
The southern border of the United States incorrectly ends on the Gila River.
After the Mexican War, Arizona was
ceded to the United States as part of New Mexico in 1848, and the
Gadsden Purchase, an area south of the Gila River, was added in
1853.
-
Salt Lake City is named "Mormonfort."
-
The western border of
Texas differs from the present one.
-
Florida's interior is unexplored.
Lake Okeechobee is named "Lake Macaco"
-
Canada is named "Nouvelle Bretagne"
-
Alaska is named Amérique Russe (Russian America).
-
The map shows nonexistent Maria Laxara
- a mythical uncharted island in the Pacific Ocean between
California and the Hawaiian Islands, as well as
"Copper", "Henderson", "Mew", "Groupe Americain", and
"Cloud"
in the Pacific.
-
Since the 1520s, the Central American states
of Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Costa Rica, and Nicaragua,
along with the Mexican state of Chiapas, had
composed the captaincy general of Guatemala, part of the viceroyalty of New Spain
(Mexico). In 1821 they became independent from Spain.
The map still shows them as "Guatemala."
-
The Mosquito Coast, named "Mosquitos"
is depicted.
The Mosquito Coast is a coastal region of Nicaragua and
Honduras. In the early colonial period, English and Dutch buccaneers preyed on
Spanish shipping from there, and English loggers exploited the forest. England
established a protective kingdom at Bluefields in 1678. Slaves from Jamaica were
brought in to increase the labor supply. In 1848, the British took San Juan del
Norte to offset U.S. interest in a transisthmian route to California. Nicaragua
protested the seizure. The Clayton-Bulwer Treaty (1850) between the United
States and Great Britain checked British expansion, but relinquishment of the
coast was delayed until a separate treaty was concluded with Nicaragua (1860),
which established the autonomy of the so-called Mosquito Kingdom.
Well, I could go on and on about this
map; it is a magnificent document and a real treat for history buffs.
