1831 Two Maps of France by Sydney Hall
Two 1831 Maps of France by Sydney Hall
"France in Provinces" (plate VI)
"France in Departments" (plate VII)
Hand Colored Outline
"Atlas of Modern Geography" by Samuel Butler D.D., published by Longman,
Hurst, Rees, Orme , Brown & Green, Paternoster Row, London 1829.
Corrected to 1831. Engraved by
Sydney Hall.
Sydney Hall was a prolific engraver and publisher in his own right.
Based in London, his work is first encountered in an Arrowsmith Atlas of 1817
and runs through to around 1850.
Dr. Samuel Butler (1774-1839)
became Lord Bishop of Lichfield and later Coventry. His 'Ancient Geography' was first published
in c.1822, with 'Modern Geography' being
produced in c.1825. It ran to numerous editions up to about 1850, being continued by his son.
This map comes from
'Atlas of Modern Geography', published in London 1831.
Plates No. VI and VII.
These two authentic maps of France
shows detail of the interior and coastal line, including
provinces, departments, provincial capitals, cities,
rivers, mountans.
Nice and Savoy are shown in Italy (Kingdom of Sardinia). They became part of
France permanently in 1860 as the price for the French emperor Napoleon III's
consent to the formation of a state covering north-central Italy under the rule
of the house of Savoy.
Landau (Rhineland-Palatinate, southwestern Germany) is incorrectly sown
on map VI as French. The town
was occupied by the French (1680-1815) and granted to Bavaria in 1816.
