became Lord Bishop of Lichfield and later Coventry. His 'Ancient Geography' was first published
in c.1822, with 'Modern Geography' being
produced in c.1825. It ran to numerous editions up to about 1850, being continued by his son.
This map comes from
'Atlas of Modern Geography', published in London 1831.
Plate No. XII.
This authentic map
covers Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and Finland.
It shows major regions, provinces, cities,

In 1831, the duchies of Schleswig and
Holstein belonged to Denmark.
Schleswig became a Danish
duchy in the 12th century and remained a fief
associated with Denmark until it was forcibly annexed by Prussia and incorporated with
Holstein as a single Prussian province in 1866.
Holstein was created as a county of the Holy Roman
Empire in 1111. It came under a personal union with the Danish king in 1459, an
arrangement which caused much unrest among the German majority. In 1474 Holstein
was raised to the rank of a duchy in the Holy Roman Empire and after 1815 in the
German Confederation. Attempts by Denmark to annex Holstein and Schleswig led to
war with Austria and Prussia in 1864. Denmark was defeated and, as a result, Holstein
was annexed by Prussia and incorporated with Schleswig as a single Prussian province
by the Peace of Prague (1866).
Engraved area is 7 1/4" x 9 1/2" on 8 1/4" x 11" sheet.
Clear plate mark.
One centerfold as issued.
Original hand colored outline; simple but nice cartouche. The condition is

Will look great with a mat and frame.
