This
superb authentic map of the German Confederation
shows
several regions of Central Europe, including Germany, Prussia,
Austria, and Bohemia.
It shows major regions, provinces, states, towns, railways,
rivers, and mountains.
Thirty-four member states
of the German Confederation are listed in the legend:
Austria
(including Bohemia and Moravia),
Prussia (including Westphalia, Saxony, Pomerania, and Silesia), Luxembourg
(then part of Holland), Holstein and Launeburg (the duchies of Schleswig
and Holstein and Launeburg belonged to Denmark), German Countries (including the
Kingdom of Bavaria, Kingdom of Saxony, Kingdom of Hanover, Hesse Cassel, Hesse Darmstadt,
Hesse Homburg,
and Kingdom od Wurttemberg), and four republics (free cities):
Hamburg, Frankfurt, Bremen, and Lubeck.
The delightful vignette drawn by Legrip and engraved by Schroeder,
placed at upper right, shows Mayence (Mainz).
The map is a magnificent document and a treat for history buffs.

In place of the Holy Roman Empire the peacemakers of the Congress of
Vienna had established a new organization of states of central Europe,
the German Confederation. This was a loose political association in
which most of the rights of sovereignty remained in the hands of the
member governments. There was no central executive or judiciary,
only a federal Diet meeting in Frankfurt am Main to consider common
legislation. The delegates who participated in its deliberations were representatives
appointed by and responsible to the rulers whom they served.
In 1850, the Punctation of
Olmütz was signed at
Olomouc, Moravia (in modern Czech Republic) between Prussia and Austria that
regulated those two powers' relations. The development leading up to the
punctation was triggered when the elector of Hesse in the autumn of 1850
appealed for help against his rebellious subjects; both Austria and Prussia sent
troops in response, and these threatened to clash. The Russian emperor thereupon
sided with Austria, and the Prussian troops withdrew as a consequence. Under the
terms of an agreement, Prussia gave up its own plans for a
union of the German states without Austria and accepted Austria's reconstitution
of the German Confederation.
