1848 Map Mountains in Asia Europe Everest not shown
1848 Map of Mountain Ranges in Asia and Europe
by Dr. Heinrich Berghaus
"Bergketten In Asien Und Europa"
Three insets: Java, Luzon, and Ye Kyun
Mt. Everest not shown!
This map by Berghaus originally appeared in "Physikalischer Atlas", 2 vols.
(Gotha: Justus Perthes, 1845-48), by Dr. Heinrich Berghaus.
This is considered the first comprehensive physical atlas of the world.
The atlas contained 90 maps in eight categories - meteorology and
climatography, hydrology and hydrography, geology, earth magnetism,
botanical geography, zoological geography, anthropography, and
ethnography - many more subjects than had previously been treated in
early nineteenth-century thematic atlases. Berghaus provided extensive
explanations, notes to the maps (covering sources, theory, and
history), tables, graphs, pictorial profiles, and other descriptive
tools.
The Berghaus's map, in a reduced size, was reprinted c1848 for
"Neuester zeitungs atlas"
edited by Joseph Meyer, published in Hildburghausen (Germany) by the
Bibliographischen
Instituts. Bibliographischen
Instituts was created in 1826 by Joseph Meyer.
The Institute issued "Meyer's Universum",
"Meyer's Travel Guide",
and many editions of "Meyer's
Atlas". This map comes from the Meyer's Atlas. Engraved under the direction of
Kleinknecht. Reference:
