Shows the Balearic Islands, Pillars of Hercules
Hand Colored Outline
Ambroise Tardieu, member of La Sociéte de Géographie,
published a number of atlases in the early 19th century. This map comes from
the 'Atlas Universel de Géographie ', published in Paris in 1842.
Edited in Paris by Furne, 55 Rue Saint-André-des-Arts. The maps
from Tardieu's atlas were based on the earlier work by Conrad Malte-Brun.
Map No. 7.
This authentic double-page folio
map of ancient
Iberian Peninsula and the Baleares shows regions,
provinces, towns, tribes,
rivers, and mountans. The Strait of Gibraltar is named
"Det. Gaditanum ou Herculeum."
The name "Pillars of Hercules " for the Strait of Gibraltar may have referred to
islands in the strait or to actual pillars in a Phoenician temple at Cadiz (Gades).

From the time of Augustus, the work of the provincial governors, who under the
Roman Republic had been commanders in military areas, became more focused on the
administration of their provinces.
Baetica,
the most thoroughly pacified of the
three Augustan provinces, was governed by a proconsul chosen by the Senate in
Rome, while Tarraconensis and
Lusitania
had governors appointed directly by the
emperor (legati Augusti). These provincial divisions continued to be used down
to the time of the emperor Diocletian (AD 284-305), who subdivided Tarraconensis
into three sections - Gallaecia, Tarraconensis, and
Carthaginensis.
Map is 13.25 x 16.75 inches on 15.25 x 19.75 inches sheet.
Wide margins suitable for framing. Printed on strong quality paper.
One centerfold as issued.
Original hand colored outline. The condition is
very good. Imperfections:
minor foxing in margins.
Will look great with a mat and frame.
