1899 Elephant, Polar Expeditions + engravings
1899 Description of Africa, of the Solar System, and the Earth. Two steel-engraved prints
Entrapping a Wild Elephant
Native Woman of Manila
This single authentic leaf comes from The New Peerless Atlas of the World,
Published by The Crowell & Kirkpatrick Co., Springfield Ohio.
Entered According to the Act of Congress, in the year 1899,
in the Office of the Librarian of Congress, at Washington, D.C. Page 137/8.
This unusual leaf deals with two topics.
Page 137 is devoted to Africa. Following the geographical, political, and
statistical information on Africa (including two tables listing European Colonies and Protectorates and
Independent States with their Capitals), given is a more detailed description of Cape Colony,
South African Republic, Congo Free State, Other Divisions (Egypt, Orange Free State, Liberia, Algeria,
and Morocco), and the Suez Canal. The information on South Africa preceeds
the South African War,
also called Boer War (Oct. 11, 1899-May 31, 1902), which was fought
between Great Britain and the two Boer (Afrikaner) republics--the South African
Republic (Transvaal) and the Orange Free State.
Congo Free State was a former state in Africa created in the 1880s as the
private holding of a group of European investors
headed by Leopold II, king of the Belgians.
The regime, under Leopold's unrestrained personal control, became notorious for the
treatment of the inhabitants. Forced labour was used to gather wild rubber, palm oil,
and ivory; lashings and the taking of hostages were techniques for encouraging
villages to meet their rubber quotas. Belgians introduced mutilation as a common
punishment even for minor offenses. Brutality was widespread in mines and on
plantations. The population of the entire state is said to have declined from 20 or 30
million to 8 million (the page quotes 10 million). In 1908 the Congo Free State was abolished and
replaced by the Belgian Congo, a colony controlled by the Belgian parliament.
Page 137 contains two delightful engravings (illustrating previous section on Asia):
-
Entrapping a wild elephant (in India),
-
Native Woman in Manila.
Page 138 is equally interesting. It gives the basic information about the Solar System, the stars,
eclipses and their causes, the Earth (the seasons, climate, hemispheres), and polar expeditions.
A treat for history buffs.

The page measures 13"x 22".
Although the leaf is more than 100 years old, it is in a very good condition.
There is yellowing of paper, appropriate for a turn-of-the-century document but the
impression is strong and the engravings are beautiful.
Will look great with a mat and frame.
