Historical and geographical information on Alexander's Empire
The map comes from a rare
Spanish atlas "El Globo" containing maps engraved by Ramon Alabern,
based on French maps by
Dufour and Duvotenay. The atlas was edited in Madrid in 1852 by Gaspar and Roig (see
link below) but was put together one year later (some maps carry the date of 1853).
The maps are accompanied
by detailed geographical, statistical, and historical notes.
Auguste Henri Dufour (1798-1865)
published a number of atlases in the early 19th century.
Thunot Duvotenay (1796-1875) was a French geographer and publisher.
This authentic
map of the Balkans, Greece, Asia Minor, the Caucasus,
Middle East, Egypt, Persia, Afghanistan,
Pakistan, and western India shows Alexander's Empire.
Major regions, provinces, tribes, kingdoms, towns,
rivers, and lakes are indicated, as well as the routes of
Alexander.
Two bonus pages from the atlas (13-16), containing interesting information
(in Spanish)
about Alexander's empire in Europe and Asia.
This map is a magnificent document and a treat for history buffs.

Alexander the Great (b. 356 BC, Pella, Macedonia
d. June 13, 323 BC, Babylon)
was a king of Macedonia. He overthrew the Persian Empire, carried Macedonian arms to India, and
laid the foundations for the Hellenistic world of territorial kingdoms.
The satrapies of the Empire
are indicated on the map, including Armenia, Bactria,
India, and Syria (with Palestine).
Southern Gedrosia, Arabia,
and the western shore of the Red Sea are inhabited by Ichthyophagi.
As written by Strabo (Geography, c. 22 CE):
"The Icthyophagi, on the ebbing of the tide, collect fish, which they
cast upon the rocks and dry in the sun. When they have well-broiled them, the
bones are piled in heaps, and the flesh trodden with the feet is made into
cakes, which are again exposed to the sun and used as food. In bad weather, when
fish cannot be procured, the bones of which they have made heaps are pounded,
made into cakes and eaten, but they suck the fresh bones. Some also live upon
shellfish, when they are fattened, which is done by throwing them into holes and
standing pools of the sea, where they are supplied with small fish, and used as
food when other fish are scarce. They have various kinds of places for
preserving and feeding fish, from whence they derive their supply."
Map is 8.3 x 11.4 inches on 10.25 x 12.75 inches sheet.
Wide margins suitable for framing.
One centerfold as issued.
Original hand colored outline. The condition is
good/very good. Imperfections: age toning;
minor browning in margins.
Will look great with a mat and frame.
