1868 Map of the World by Stieler. Nonexistent Islands
1868 Map of the World on Mercator's Projection from Stieler's Schul-Atlas
"Erdkarte in Mercator's Projection"
Time Zones
Shows nonexistent islands!
This map comes from
Ad. Stieler's Schul-Atlas über alle Theile der Erde und
über das Weltgebäude,
special edition for the Austro-Hungarian monarchy
published by Justus Perthes, Gotha in Vienna, 1868; Reworked
and updated by
Dr. Heinrich Berghaus. Plate No. 4. Engraved by C. Poppey.
Adolf Stieler (1775-1836) was a
German cartographer. He worked most of his life in the Justus Perthes
Geographical Institution, Gotha, which published his general atlas.
This authentic map
shows the world on Mercator's projection.
Below given are some interesting details related to the
map's content.
-
North America is divided into United States (Ver. Staaten), Mexico, and
Hudsonbay Laender (including Canada and Labrador).
Texas and California are prominently marked.
-
The Northwest Passage is shown. It was explored in 1854 by Robert McClure.
-
In South America, the maps shows N. Granada (Colombia), Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, Guyana, Patagonia,
La Plata (Argentina), and Chili (Chile).
-
The map shows nonexistent Aurora Islands (Aurora I.),
southwestward of the Falklands, between there and South Georgia.
Their took their name from the Spanish ship Aurora that first reported them in
1762, an nobody has had
a sight of them since 1856. The Auroras stayed on the maps until the 1870s. For an
excellent story about
these islands, read "No Longer on the Map" by Raymond Ramsay (Ballantine Books 1972),
pages 78-80.
-
The map also shows nonexistent Emerald and Nimrod
Islands, north of Wilkes Land (Antarctica).
The complete list of the peri-Antarctic islands, including the non-existent ones,
can be found here.
-
Antarctica is not shown, but there is a comment "Südl. Kontinent?"
placed in the vicinity of the Graham Land.
-
Tasmania
is called van Diemens Ld.
-
Africa's interior is unknown. In particular, Lake Victoria is not shown.
South Africa is called "Kaffraria." The coast of East Africa
is called "Sawahilis"
-
Nonexistent island
Joao de Lisboa
is placed south of Reunion I.
-
Hong-Kong and Singapore are marked
-
Time zones are indicated at the bottom.
