Ad. Stieler's Schul-Atlas über alle Theile der Erde und
über das Weltgebäude,
special edition for the Austro-Hungarian monarchy
published by Justus Perthes, Gotha in Vienna, 1868; Reworked
and updated by
Dr. Heinrich Berghaus. Plate No. 11.
Adolf Stieler (1775-1836) was a
German cartographer. He worked most of his life in the Justus Perthes
Geographical Institution, Gotha, which published his general atlas.
This superb authentic map of Scandinavia
shows detail of the interior and coastal line, including states,
provinces, cities,
rivers, mountans (heights of major mountains are shown in the table), rairoads
etc. Also displayed are the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia
(shown as Esthland, Livland, and Curland), and Lithuania (Kowno, Samogitien), as well as
Finland - all belonging to the Russian Empire.
Oslo is called Christiania (this name was in use during 1624-1877).
The list of 24 Swedish and 17 Norwegian provinces and districts
is given at the bottom. District capitals are underlined. The heights
of highest peaks are listed below the title.
The map is a magnificent document and a treat for history buffs.

One centerfold, as issued. The condition is
good.
Imperfections: uniform
age toning; some browning (mainly in margins).
Will look great with a mat and frame.
