This litho map by William Hughes comes from the
Philip's Library Atlas
issued 1885 by George Philip & Son, London & Liverpool.
Map No. 17.
A fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, Hughes (1817-1876) was a
professor of geography at the College of Civil Engineering. He was also
a surveyor and engraver. The Royal Geographical Society was responsible
for issuing inexpensive publications, including its maps, that were
quite popular and responsible for the development of a new form of
literature readily available and enjoyed by a wide diversity of people.
Hughes is responsible for maps published in a number of atlases in
Edinburgh, London, and the United States.

Australia and New Zealand.

Western Australia, Northern Territory, Queensland, South Australia,
New South Wales, and Victoria are clearly indicated.

Northern Territory is marked as "United provisionally
to South Australia 1863".

The Great Barrier Reef (of Coral) is shown.

The line of Overland telegraph (from Adelaide to Darvin)
is marked.

Names of various transcontinental explorers, such as
NcKinlay, Warburton, Richards, and others, are given

Railroads (Melbourne-Sydney, Brisbane-Mitchell, Port Lyttleton-Dunedin)
are indicated.
The map is a magnificent document and a treat for history buffs.
