1850 Engraving of Weehawken New Jersey by Bartlett
1850 View of the Hudson near Weehawken, New Jersey,
by William Henry Bartlett/Joseph Meyer
"Scenerie am Hudson, Bei Weehawken"
This beautiful steel engraving appeared in "Meyer's Universum"
by Joseph Meyer (1796-1856), published in Hildburghausen (Germany) by the
Bibliographischen
Instituts 1850. William Henry Bartlett (1809-1854)
visited North America in the early 1830s.
He drew many views of United States. His drawings were engraved in steel and
published in "American Scenery" in London.
Bibliographischen
Instituts was created in 1826 by Joseph Meyer.
From 1833 to 1864, Joseph Meyer issued a
journal, Meyer's Universum, containing text and steel engravings of all
parts of the world. Some of those engravings appeared in
the 52-volume
"Conversations Lexicon" (1840 - 1855).
The Institute also issued
"Meyer's Travel Guide"
and many editions of "Meyer's
Atlas". In 1874, the Institute was moved to Leipzig.
This beautiful authentic steel engraving is
based on an earlier
picture by W.H. Bartlett, originally published in 1839,
entitled
"Villa on the Hudson, Near Weehawken."
Weehawken lies in Hudson county, northeastern New Jersey, 5 miles north
of Jersey City and opposite New York City on the Hudson River.
It was settled by the Dutch about 1647. Prior
to 1840, when Hudson county was formed, Weehawken was part of the Old
Township of Bergen. Weehawken township was incorporated in 1859. There
are various theories about the derivation of its Delaware Indian
place-name; one holds that it means "corn (maize) land," others allude
to "trees" and "mills."
