from "Meyer's Universum"
"DIE ARCTIC GLETSCHER
(Melville Bay)"
This beautiful steel engraving appeared in "Meyer's Universum"
by Joseph Meyer (1796-1856), published in Hildburghausen (Germany) by the
Bibliographischen

Bibliographischen
Instituts was created in 1826 by Joseph Meyer.
From 1833 to 1864, Joseph Meyer issued a
journal, Meyer's Universum, containing text and steel engravings of all
parts of the world. Some of those engravings appeared in
the 52-volume
"Conversations Lexicon" (1840 - 1855).
The Institute also issued
"Meyer's Travel Guide"
and many editions of "Meyer's
Atlas". In 1874, the Institute was moved to Leipzig.
This beautiful authentic steel engraving shows
a lovely view of Melville Bay in the High Arctic of Greenland
with a sailing ship in the background,
several species of seabirds, and walruses (or other Arctic seals).

Melville Bay is a broad indentation of the western coast of Greenland,
opening to the SW into Baffin Bay. The inland ice cap comes down to the
coast, and glaciers discharge much ice into its waters.
In June 1818, Sir John Ross, in his
initial explorations along the west coast of Greenland,
made the European discovery of Melville Bay, where he encountered a
theretofore unknown band of Eskimos, whom he dubbed the "Arctic
Highlanders". He also reported finding meteorites at Cape York.
The view is 4.6 x 6.3 inches on 5.9 x 9.2 sheet.
Margins suitable for framing.
Clear plate mark. The condition is
good.
Imperfections: several brownish spots.
Will look great with a mat and frame.
