1846 Dated Map India Bombay Presidency Hyderabad SDUK
1846 Dated Map of Western India by SDUK
India III, Bombay Presidency
This splendid authentic dated map was
published by Charles Knight and Company, 22 Ludgate Street, London,
January 1, 1846, for
the Society for the
Diffusion of Useful Knowledge.
Engraved by J.&C. Walker. Plate No. 99.
The Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge (SDUK),
which flourished for 20 years in early Victorian England,
was devoted to producing high quality but cheap literature to the lower
classes. The SDUK can be credited with demonstrating to
a skeptical book trade the existence of a mass market and the commercial
possibilities of mass production of cheap books. The Series of Maps was
one of the SDUK's most successful ventures; indeed, proceeds from the
maps financed many other SDUK project. The SDUK archive, located at the
library of University College, London, and the basis of this research,
provides a wealth of information about publishing practices of the day.
This extremely detailed authentic map
is a part of the eleven-map set by SDUK covering the whole India and neighboring regions.
I will be offering these maps in order, on eBay. This particular map, No. III,
covers Bombay Presidency (Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka).
Scale is given in British Miles and Indian Cosses.

Konkan (Concan), also called Aparanta, is a
coastal plain of western India, lying between the Arabian
Sea (west) and the Western Ghats (east). The plain stretches approximately 330
mi from the Daman Ganga River north of Bombay to the Terekhol River
between Maharashtra and Goa, Daman, and Diu in the south.
Between 28 and 47 mi in width, the Konkan includes Thana, Greater Bombay,
Raigarh, and Ratnagiri districts.
The ports of the Konkan were known to the ancient Greeks and Egyptians and to
Arab traders. The spice trade brought prosperity to the ancient Hindu kingdoms
of the area. The cave temples of Elephanta Island and Kanheri bear testimony to
the prosperous culture of this era. With the advent of the Portuguese and
British, the port cities were further developed and fortified but now have lost
their former importance.
Map measures 10.4 x 14.2 inches on 14.1 x 17.2 inches sheet.
Printed on a strong quality paper. Hand colored outline. Clear plate mark.
The map is in very good/excellent
condition.
Will look great with a mat and frame.
