1850 Engraving of Palisades Hudson NY NJ Bartlett Boats
1850 View of the Palisades by
William Henry Bartlett/Joseph Meyer
"DIE PALLISADEN (UFER DES HUDSON)"
This beautiful steel engraving appeared in "Meyer's Universum"
by Joseph Meyer (1796-1856), published in Hildburghausen (Germany) by the
Bibliographischen
Instituts c1850. Plate DCCCXXXII.
Bibliographischen
Instituts was created in 1826 by Joseph Meyer.
From 1833 to 1864, Joseph Meyer issued a
journal, Meyer's Universum, containing text and steel engravings of all
parts of the world. Some of those engravings appeared in
the 52-volume
"Conversations Lexicon" (1840 - 1855).
The Institute also issued
"Meyer's Travel Guide"
and many editions of "Meyer's
Atlas". In 1874, the Institute was moved to Leipzig.
This beautiful authentic steel engraving is based on the famous
sketch by W. H. Bartlett, entitled "The Palisades (Hudson River)",
published 1829-1837.
The Palisades, also called the New Jersey Palisades or the Hudson
Palisades, are a line of steep cliffs along the west side of the lower
Hudson River in northeast New Jersey and southern New York.
The cliffs stretch north from Jersey City approximately 20 mi
to near Nyack, New York. They rise nearly vertically from near
the edge of the river, ranging in height between 350 ft and 550
ft. The cliffs are among the most dramatic geologic features in
the vicinity of New York City, forming a canyon of the Hudson north of
Fort Lee, New Jersey, as well as providing a dramatic vista of the New
York City skyline from the opposite bank of the Hudson.
The engraving depicts the Palisades in their full glory, sailing boats, boats, a steamer, and
more.
William Henry Bartlett visited North America in 1826.
He drew many views of United States. His drawings were engraved in steel and
published in "American Scenery" in London.
