Atlas Complet de Géographie Éleméntaire en 59 cartes
par M.L. Dussieux
Paris, Jacques Lecoffre et Comp., Rue du Vieux - Colombier, 29.
Dussieux, a professor of history at École Militaire de Saint-Cyr,
published a number of atlases in the mid-19th century. This map comes from
the 'Complet de Géographie Éleméntaire', Paris 1859.
Map No. 25. Engraved by Marlier.
This authentic dated map
covers Turkey, the Caucasus (Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan),
Cyprus, Middle East, Saudi Arabia, Oman,
Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Iraq,
Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan,
Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan.
It shows states, provinces, towns,
rivers, lakes, and mountains.
-
The map shows Persia during the reign of
Naser od-Din Shah (ruled 1848-96).
Unable to regain territory lost to Russia in the early 19th century, he
sought compensation by seizing Herat, Afghanistan, in 1856. Great Britain
regarded the move as a threat to British India and declared war on Iran, forcing
the return of Herat as well as Iranian recognition of the kingdom of
Afghanistan.
Popular and religious
antagonism to the Qajar regime increased as Naser od-Din Shah strove to raise
funds by selling concessions, ostensibly for the development of his country's
resources, to Europeans. The money paid for concessions was squandered
by the court and on the Shah's journeys to Europe.
-
The map shows
Afghanistan
during the reign of Dost Mohammad (1826-39; 1843-63). He
consolidated his rule by occupying Kandahar (1855), Balkh and the northern
Khanates (1859), and Herat (1863), the last less than a month before his death
in June 1863.
-
The eastern border of Afghanistan is shown to extend all the way to the
Sulaiman Range , i.e.,
Sewestan is shown as part of Afghanistan.
-
Sistan
("Seistan") is an extensive border region, eastern Iran and southwestern
Afghanistan. Forty percent of its area is in Iran, as well as the majority of
its sparse population.
Though Shah Isma'il I (1502-24) of Persia conquered Sistan, he and his
successors left the local kings largely in control. In 1747 Sistan came under the
control of an Afghan, after whose death it was for long a bone of contention
between Iran and Afghanistan. This dispute led to British arbitration and the
delimitation of the Irano-Afghan frontier in 1872.
-
Herat has been fought over by many foreign conquerors throughout
history. The Macedonian Alexander the Great took it; later it was held by
Parthians, Kushans, Persians, and Hephthalites. In the 7th century Herat fell to
the Arabs, and it was conquered by the Mongols in the 13th century.
Various other peoples contested its possession until its annexation
by a unified Afghanistan in 1747.
The map shows Herat as an independent entity.
-
The Ottoman Empire
was created in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries on the ruins of the
Byzantine Empire, from the caliphate of Baghdad and independent Turkish
principalities. It occupied a vast territory extending over parts
of Asia, Africa, and Europe between the Eastern Mediterranean, the Black
Sea, the Indian Ocean, and the Red Sea.
