1850 Engraving Burlington Iowa on the Mississippi
1850 View of Burlington, Iowa
from "Meyer's Universum"
"BURLINGTON AM MISSISSIPPI"
This beautiful steel engraving appeared in "Meyer's Universum"
by Joseph Meyer (1796-1856), published in Hildburghausen (Germany) by the
Bibliographischen
Instituts c1850.
Bibliographischen
Instituts was created in 1826 by Joseph Meyer.
From 1833 to 1864, Joseph Meyer issued a
journal, Meyer's Universum, containing text and steel engravings of all
parts of the world. Some of those engravings appeared in
the 52-volume
"Conversations Lexicon" (1840 - 1855).
The Institute also issued
"Meyer's Travel Guide"
and many editions of "Meyer's
Atlas".
This beautiful authentic steel engraving shows Burlington,
seat of Des Moines county, southeastern Iowa. It is a port
on the Mississippi River (there bridged to Illinois), 78 miles
south-southwest of Davenport. The only
adequate steamboat landing on that stretch of the river, it served
briefly (1837-38) as the Wisconsin territorial capital and (1838-40) as
the Iowa territorial capital. The Burlington and Missouri River
Railroad began operations in 1856 and made the town a bustling railroad
centre.
