Dr. Christian Gottfried Daniel Stein (1771-1830)
was a German cartographer and publisher, the principal rival to Adolf
Stieler, with larger maps and a refined style of engraving work
reminiscent of later Homann maps.
After his death, the atlas was edited by his collaborators, including
Friedrich Wilhelm Streit.
This authentic double-page folio
detailed map of the Kingdom of Saxony
during the reign of Frederick Augustus II (reigned 1836-54)
shows provinces, cities, churches, post offices, forts, roads,
postal roads, and railroads.
Below given are some interesting details related to the
map's content.
-
Napoleon conquered Saxony in 1806 and made it a kingdom. It was
thereafter one of his most loyal allies, and, after his overthrow, its
territory was greatly reduced by the victorious powers at the Congress
of Vienna (1814-15). Prussia acquired Wittenberg, Torgau, northern
Thuringia, and most of Lusatia, which became the Prussian province of
Saxony; the truncated kingdom of Saxony became a member of the German
Confederation. As a result of uprisings in 1830, a constitution was
granted in the kingdom in 1831.
-
The provinces of Saxony are outlined: Dresden (yellow),
Leipzig (green), Zwickau (red), Bautzen (purple), and Schönburg
(blue)
-
The railroad lines: Dresden-Leipzig-Halle, Halle-Altenburg,
are marked in blue.
-
The map also depicts parts of Bohemia, Silesia, Prussian Saxony,
Brandenburg, Bavaria, and the grand duchy of Saxe-Weimar-Altenburg.
The map is a magnificent document and a treat for history buffs.
