1832 Dated Hand Colored Map South America Auroras
1832 Dated Hand Colored Map of South America
by Selves
"Carte de L'AMÉRIQUE MÉRIDIONALE 1832 A Paris."
Atlas Géographique
Dressé Sous la Direction
du Conseil Royal de Instruction publique
Pour l'Usage des Colléges
Par H. Selves.
Paris, 1833.
Shows the Auroras; Uruguay called Banda Urientale; Bolivia called Haut Pérou
Printed on Watermarked Laid Paper
This rare, large format
map comes from the 'Atlas Géographique', Part 3 (Géographie
Moderne Actuelle)
by Henri Selves, published 1833 in Paris, Au Depot
General, rue des Mathurins St. Jacques, No. 18.
Imp-ie de H. Selves, lithog-phe de l'Universite a Chevry-Cossigny - Seine-Et-Marne.
An extremely early example of lithography on
French maps, perhaps the earliest I have ever seen.
The lithographic process was not used to any great extent for quantity
production until 1820, and not mechanized until 1860.
This superb authentic double-page folio
map of South America shows coastal lines and the interior,
including names of Indian tribes, states, provinces, regions,
mountain chains,
rivers, and lakes. The map is fairly detailed and contains many interesting
oddities.
-
The map shows central and north Argentina
as "Provinces-Unies de La Plata" (United Provinces of the Rio
de la Plata).
-
Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego
are shown as a separate entity. It is only
in 1881 that Argentina and Chile (called Chili on the map)
agreed to delimit
their Andean frontier, including partitioning Tierra del Fuego.
-
The confederation of
Colombia covers today's Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador,
and Panama (historically,
Venezuela and Ecuador seceded in 1830, so the map is incorrect here!).
Colombia is named "Nouvelle Grenade."
- The borders of French Guyana, Dutch Guyana (Surinam), and British Guyana
slightly differ from the present ones. Northern Brazil is called
"Guyane Portugaise"
-
Bolivia is called "Haut Pérou" (Upper Peru).
In 1825, an Upper Peruvian congress declared the nation independent.
-
Borders of Peru, Ecuador, Brazil, Bolivia, and Chile
are very different from the present ones.
In 1842, the border between Chile and Bolivia was delineated along
Rio Frio (around Punta San Pedro)
-
The map shows the Brazilian Empire
during the period of regency (1831-40), preceding the reign of
Pedro II, second and last emperor of Brazil. The 19 governments of
the empire are listed in the table.
-
Southern Rio Grande do Sul is shown as part of
Uruguay (Banda Orientale). Uruguay proper
is called "Cisplatina."
-
In January
1833 Britain reasserted an earlier claim to the Falkland Islands, and a
British warship took possession of the islands. The map shows the islands
as "Iles Malouines ou Falkland."
-
The map shows nonexistent Aurora Islands
(Iles Aurore),
southwestward of the Falklands, between there and South Georgia.
Their took their name from the Spanish ship Aurora that first reported them in
1762, an nobody has had
a sight of them since 1856. The Auroras stayed on the maps until the 1870s. For an
excellent story about
these islands, read "No Longer on the Map" by Raymond Ramsay (Ballantine Books 1972),
pages 78-80.
