1843 Engraving View of Sing-Sing Prison NY by Blouet
1843 View of Sing Sing Prison (NY) by Blouet
"Prison d'Etat a Sing-Sing ou Mont Pleasant (New York)"
This beautiful steel engraving
by Lemaitre after a picture by Blouet was
published in a volume of L'Univers, Paris, c. 1843.
Guillaume-Abel Blouet (1795-1853) was a French architect and architectural historian.
He studied American prison architecture in the United States,
chronicling the work of John Haviland in particular in a report of 1837.
This beautiful authentic steel engraving shows
an attractive view of Sing-Sing Prison.
Sing Sing Correctional Facility is a maximum security prison in
Ossining, New York. It is located in Westchester County approximately 30
miles north of New York City on the edge of the Hudson River. The name
comes from the original name of the village of Ossining - though the
penitentiary was first called "Mount Pleasant" when it opened in 1828.
Today Sing Sing houses more than 1700 prisoners.

Blouet was appointed Inspecteur Général des Prisons in 1839, designing
prisons in France.
After their visit to the United States, Blouet and Denetz (a judge)
wrote the
extensive Rapports a m. le comte de Montalivet. Ministre Secrétaire de
l'État sur les pénitenciers des États-Unis
(Paris: Imprimerie Royale,
1837). This work was a in-depth study of American prisons.
Furthermore, Blouet provided a
number of architectural and other drawings for prisons in each state
surveyed, including fine representations of New Yorks Auburn and Sing
Sing penitentiaries. The Demetz and Blouet study collected much diverse
information on the American prison system and its publication led
directly to major reform in European prison management and design.
The view is 4.3 x 5.9 inches on 5.2 x 8.4 inches
sheet. Margins suitable for framing.
The condition is
good.
Imperfections: one small rust spot.
