One Bonus Leaf:
Historical, statistical, and geographical information on Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia
Hand Colored Outline
The map comes from a rare
Spanish atlas "El Globo" containing maps engraved by Ramon Alabern,
based on French maps by
Dufour and Duvotenay. The atlas was edited in Madrid in 1852 by Gaspar and Roig
(see
link below)
but was put together one year later (some maps carry the date of 1853).
The maps are accompanied
by detailed geographical, statistical, and historical notes.
Auguste Henri Dufour (1798-1865)
published a number of atlases in the early 19th century.
Thunot Duvotenay (1796-1875) was a French geographer and publisher.
This authentic map
of northeastern Africa and the Arabian coast of the Red Sea
shows detail of the interior and coastal line, including states,
provinces, tribes, cities,
rivers, mountans, etc.
A number of kingdoms in southern Sudan and Ethiopia are marked:
Kordofan, Darfur, Gondar, Tigre, Sennar, Amhara, Mara. Palestine, Syria, Sinai and
Arabia (including Mecca - "La Meca", Medina, Jeddah) are also shown.
One bonus pages from the atlas (153-4), containing interesting information
(in Spanish)
is included. The page is divided into the following sections:
-
General information on Egypt
-
Principal towns of Egypt (Alexandria, Cairo,
Damietta, Giza, al-Fayyum, Port Said, Assuan)
-
General information on Nubia
-
General information on Nubia
-
General information on Abyssinia
The map is a magnificent document and a treat for
history buffs.

In May 1805 a revolt broke out in Cairo against the Ottoman viceroy, Khurshid
Pasha. The 'ulama' invested Muhammad 'Ali as viceroy of
Egypt .
Muhammad 'Ali's viceroyalty was marked by a series of military successes, some
of which were attended by political failures that frustrated his wider aims.
In 1831 Muhammad 'Ali embarked upon the invasion of Syria.
The Ottoman army
was defeated near Konya in Anatolia (December 1832), and in 1833 the Sultan
ceded the Syrian provinces to Muhammad 'Ali.
In 1839 Ottoman forces reentered Syria but were defeated by Ibrahim at the
Battle of Nizip (Nezib). A fortnight later Mahmud II died, and the Ottoman
Empire seemed on the verge of dissolution; it was saved only by European
intervention.
In the mid-18th century,
the balance of power in Ethiopia.
shifted southward to Shewa, which prospered in the growing trade of
the Gibe states. Shewa's self-proclaimed king, Sahle Selassie (reigned 1813-47),
and his successors expanded southward, so that by 1840 they controlled most of
Shewa to the Awash River and enjoyed suzerainty as far south as Gurage.
The map lists the principalities forming Ethiopia during this difficult period.
In July 1820, Muhammad 'Ali sent an
army under his son Isma'il to conquer Sudan.
By 1821 the Funj and the sultan of Darfur had
surrendered to his forces, and the Nilotic Sudan from Nubia to the Ethiopian
foothills and from the 'Atbarah River to Darfur became part of his expanding
empire.
In 1826 'Ali Khurshid Agha was appointed as governor-general.
Under his initiative
trade routes were protected and expanded, Khartoum was developed as the
administrative capital, and a host of agricultural and technical improvements
were undertaken. When he retired to Cairo in 1838, Khurshid left a prosperous
and contented country behind him.
Map is 8.25 x 11.4 inches on 10.3 x 12.75 inches sheet.
Margins suitable for framing.
One centerfold as issued. The condition is
fair/good. Imperfections: browning and foxing,
mainly in the margins.
Will look great with a mat and frame.
