Madrid 1852
Plan of Jerusalem; Three Bonus Leaves: Genesis, Ancient Palestine, Tribes of Israel
Hand Colored Outline
The map comes from a rare
Spanish atlas "El Globo" containing maps engraved by Ramon Alabern,
based on French maps by
Dufour and Duvotenay. The atlas was edited in Madrid in 1852 by Gaspar and Roig
(see
link below)
but was put together one year later (some maps carry the date of 1853).
The maps are accompanied
by detailed geographical, statistical, and historical notes.
Auguste Henri Dufour (1798-1865)
published a number of atlases in the early 19th century.
Thunot Duvotenay (1796-1875) was a French geographer and publisher.
This authentic map
of ancient Palestine
shows detail of the interior and coastal line, including
provinces, towns,
rivers, mountans, etc. The twelve tribes of Israel
are indicated. The route of the Israelites across the Sinai desert is marked;
it is accompanied by explanatory notes (e.g.,
"Piedra de Horeb de dende Moises hizo salir el agua").
The city plan of ancient Jerusalem is shown in the inset at lower right.
Depicted are temples, palaces, etc.
Three bonus pages from the atlas (5-10), containing interesting information
(in Spanish)
is included. These pages are divided into the following sections:
-
Genesis (Reseña Historica. Historia Sagrada)
-
Geography of Canaan
-
The 12 tribes of Israel (Manasseh, Gad, Reuben, Naphtali,
Asher, Zebulun, Issachar, Ephraim, Dan, Benjamin, Simeon, Judah)
-
The land of Philistines
The map is a magnificent document and a treat for
history buffs.
