Arnouel Langellier. Printed in
a bastarde typeface, single column,
"Second aage; du monde avant Jesuchrist"
The encyclopedic world history
structured on medieval theology, Rudimentum Novitiorum, became
better known through French translations under the title "La Mer des Hystoires".
Rudimentum Novitiorum was first printed in Lübeck by Lucas (Lukas) Brandis
in 1475. The were several sixteenth-century editions of the
"La Mer des Hystoires" (printed
in Lyon and Paris).
In short, the Rudimentum was a comprehensive history of the world derived from the Bible,
the Church Fathers, pagan mythology and compilations such as that of Vincent of
Beauvais, offering the basics of historical knowledge to young clerics.
For the
chronological arrangement use has been made of genealogical charts which are
illustrated with portraits and scenes, including the first printed map of the
world and the map of Palestine - the earliest modern printed map
(see "The Earliest Printed Maps" by Tony Campbell, University of California Press, 1987).
This authentic woodcut
leaf from the late edition of "La Mer des Hystoires" is devoted to
Europe. It contains several
sections describing, in alphabetic order, various regions of Europe.
Each section begins with a decorative woodcut initial.

historic region of southwestern Germany

De Trace (Thrace),
ancient and modern region of the southeastern Balkans (Greece, Bulgaria, and Turkey).
The text mentions Constantinople and Tyras, or Tiras, the last son of
Japhet, is by universal agreement esteemed the father of the Thracians.

De Thessalie (Thessaly),
largest ancient region of Greece in north central Greece.

De Thoscane (Tuscany; Italian Toscana),
a region in central Italy.

De Turinge (Thuringia), a region in central Germany.

De Touraine - a former province of France. Its capital was Tours.

De Gascongne (Gascony; Gascogne), a
historical region in southwestern France. The text mentions Bordeaux
and Toulouse.
