1805 Map Belgium Luxembourg by Arrowsmith Netherlands
1805 Map of Belgium and Luxembourg by Aaron Arrowsmith & Samuel Lewis.
"Netherlands"
The Austrian Netherlands
This copper-engraved map comes from "A New and Elegant General Atlas. Comprising All the
New Discoveries, to the Present Time" by Arrowsmith and Lewis. Printed
in Boston by Thomas & Andrews, 1805. "From Ferrari's Map"
Aaron Arrowsmith (1750-1823) was a
British geographer and cartographer who engraved and published many fine
maps and atlases based on the best available sources of the day.
Without a formal education Arrowsmith went to London c. 1770 and, after
working as a surveyor, established himself as a mapmaker and publisher.
His large world map (1790) established his reputation.
Samuel Lewis (ca. 1754-1822) was an American geographer and taught drawing
and writing. Shortly after the turn of the century, Lewis and Arrowsmith
formed a partnership and the 1804 edition of "A New and Elegant General Atlas"
was their first
product. The 1805 printing was prepared to accompany Jedidiah Morse's
American Geography and is unrevised from the 1804 edition.
This authentic map shows the Austrian Netherlands
(Belgium and Luxembourg).
Indicated are main divisions, counties, towns, and rivers.
The map is a magnificent document and a treat for history buffs.

By the Treaty of Utrecht (1713), ending the War of the Spanish
Succession, the territory comprising present-day Belgium and Luxembourg
(the independent principality of Liege not included) passed under the
sovereignty of the Holy Roman emperor Charles VI, head of the Austrian
branch of the house of Habsburg.
In 1795, the French National Convention voted to annex the southern
Netherlands and the principality of Liege, where a revolution against
the prince-bishop had prepared the country for assimilation into the
French Republic.
Map is 7.9 x 9.7 inches on a 8.7 x 10.7 inches sheet.
Copperplate; clear plate mark.
The condition is
fair. Imperfections: browning and foxing;
impression a bit weak; one tear in the left bottom corner, repaired.
Will look great with a mat and frame.
