This authentic antique engraving depicts
the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, the memorial to Benjamin Franklin.
On February 5, 1824, Samuel Vaughan Merrick and William H. Keating
founded The Franklin Institute of the State of Pennsylvania for the
Promotion of the Mechanic Arts. The Franklin Institute hired notable
Philadelphia architect, John Haviland, to design its original building
located at 15 South 7th Street.
In 1934, the Institute moved to its current location on the Benjamin
Franklin Parkway.
In 1938, Philadelphia Mayor S. Davis Wilson and Frances Wistar,
president of the Philadelphia Society for the Preservation of Landmarks,
convinced inventor and radio pioneer A. Atwater Kent to purchase the
historic Franklin Institute building and create a history museum for the
City of Philadelphia (the Atwater Kent Museum).
Roux de Rochelle, the French Minister to the U.S.,
included the American volume in a large series entitled L'Univers.
The book contained 96 images of the United States and it was
first issued in 1837. Beginning in 1839 the plates were reissued in
several French editions, as well as editions in Italian, Spanish and
German.
