This authentic antique engraving depicts Eastern State Penitentiary in
Philadelphia. Built 1823-26 and opened in 1829, as part of a
controversial movement to change the behavior of inmates through
"confinement in solitude with labor," Eastern State Penitentiary quickly
became one of the most expensive and most copied buildings in the young
United States. It is estimated that more than 300 prisons worldwide are
based on the Penitentiary's wagon-wheel, or "radial" floor plan. Some of
America's most notorious criminals were held in the Penitentiary's
vaulted, sky-lit cells, including bank robber Willie Sutton and Al
Capone. After 142 years of consecutive use, Eastern State Penitentiary
was completely abandoned in 1971.
Roux de Rochelle, the French Minister to the U.S.,
included the American volume in a large series entitled L'Univers.
The book contained 96 images of the United States and it was
first issued in 1837. Beginning in 1839 the plates were reissued in
several French editions, as well as editions in Italian, Spanish and
German.

The condition is fair/good. Imperfections:
age toning; minor browning. Water stains in margins; left margin slightly trimmed -
as originally appeared in the book.
Will look great with a mat and frame.
