Double Page Folio Map, Original Outline Hand Color
This map comes from first edition of the 'Atlas Universel...', by
Edme Mentelle and Pierre Grégoire Chanlaire
published in Paris during the French Revolution in
1797/8 (An six de la République; according to the French Revolutionary calendar).
Plate No. 88.
Edme Mentelle (1730-1815) was a
historian, geographer, and editor, active in Paris, Cour du Louvre, 7.
He was a head of the French Academy's section of Geography.
Mentelle was well known in his own time as a Voltairean historian who
wrote treatises promoting the Enlightenment for young readers.
Known for his manipulation of both politics and science,
Mentelle was in turn an enthusiastic supporter of the Republic, of
Napoleon, and of Louis XVIII, from whom he received the Cross of the
Legion of Honour.
Pierre Grégoire Chanlaire (1758-1817)
was a cartographer and editor,
active in Paris, rue Geoffroy-Langevin 328.
The map was engraved by
Alexandre Blondeau (d. 1828),
was the Royal Engraver in Paris.

This authentic detailed map of Switzerland and neighboring countries
shows cantons,
towns, villages, roads, rivers, lakes, and
mountains.
The map depicts:
-
The Alps. Individual peaks and passes are marked.
-
North Italy, including Piedmont-Sardinia, Duchy of Milan, and the Republic
of Venice.
-
The Cisalpine Republic ("Republique Cisalpine"). The Republic was
formed by Napoleon Bonaparte in June 1797 in conquered
territories centred in the Po River valley of northern Italy. Its
territory first embraced Lombardy, then extended to Emilia, Modena, and
Bologna (collectively known for some months previously as the Cispadane
Republic), and then drew from parts of the Venetian hinterland and
from the Swiss cantons of the Valtellina. The republic was confirmed in
the Franco-Austrian Treaty of Campo Formio (Oct. 17, 1797).
-
Recent French acquisitions (French Departments) in
Italy and Switzerland:
-
In 1792, Savoie (corresponding to modern Haute-Savoie, Piemont)
was annexed to France
as the new department of Mont-Blanc.
-
In 1793,
Porrentruy and Delémont were
annexed to France as the new department of Mont-Terrible (capital Porrentruy)
-
In 1798, with the aid of local Jacobins, Geneva was annexed to France.
-
Mulhouse (Mülhausen) is shown as a Swiss enclave in Haut-Rhin.
The city joined the Swiss Confederation as an associate in 1515 and was
therefore not annexed by France in the Peace of Westphalia in 1648 like
the rest of the Sundgau. It was then considered a free republic
associated with the Swiss Confederation until it was annexed by France
on January 4, 1798,
The map also shows Swabia and Liechtenstein ("Wadutz"; shown as part of Austria).
The map is a magnificent document and a treat for history buffs.
