The mouths of the Scheldt
This map comes from first edition of the 'Atlas Universel...', by
Edme Mentelle and Pierre Grégoire Chanlaire
published in Paris during the French Revolution in
1797 (An six de la République; according to the French Revolutionary calendar).
Plate No. 85, left portion.
Edme Mentelle (1730-1815) was a
historian, geographer, and editor, active in Paris, Cour du Louvre, 7.
He was a head of the French Academy's section of Geography.
Mentelle was well known in his own time as a Voltairean historian who
wrote treatises promoting the Enlightenment for young readers.
Known for his manipulation of both politics and science,
Mentelle was in turn an enthusiastic supporter of the Republic, of
Napoleon, and of Louis XVIII, from whom he received the Cross of the
Legion of Honour.
Pierre Grégoire Chanlaire (1758-1817)
was a cartographer and editor,
active in Paris, rue Geoffroy-Langevin 328.
The map was engraved by
Pierre François Tardieu (1752-1798),
a member of a French family of notable engravers.

Zeeland, also called Zealand in English, is a province of the
Netherlands. The province, located in the south-west of the country,
consists of a number of islands
and a strip bordering Belgium. Its capital is Middelburg.
The Scheldt (Dutch: Schelde, French Escaut) is a river in northern
France, western Belgium and the southwestern part of the Netherlands.
Near Antwerp, the Scheldt flows west into the Netherlands towards the
North Sea. Originally there were two branches from that point: the
Oosterschelde (Eastern Scheldt; "Escaut Occidental" on the map)
and the Westerschelde (Western Scheldt; "Escaut Oriental")
but in the 19th century the river was cut off from its eastern
(actually: northern) branch by a dike that connects Zuid-Beveland with
the mainland (North Brabant). Today the river therefore continues into
the Westerschelde estuary only, passing Terneuzen to reach the North Sea
between Breskens in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen and Vlissingen (Flushing) on
Walcheren.
This copperplate map is 12.9 x 9.5 inches on 17.1 x 11.1
inches sheet.
Printed on laid paper, clear plate mark.
The map that appeared in the atlas
was originally printed on two pages. This map of Zeeland
constitutes a left
portion only; the right portion has been lost.
The condition of the map is
very good. Imperfections: this is the left
page of a double page folio map.
Will look great with a mat and frame.
