1561 Munster Leaf Passau Austria Salzburg 3 Woodcuts
1561 Description of Germany and Austria
from "Cosmographia" by Sebastian Münster
Rhaetia, Albertus Magnus, Passau, Salzburg
Three Woodcut Pictures
Single authentic woodcut leaf from
"Cosmographia" by Sebastian Münster. German edition; Basel printing
house of Sebastian Heinrich-Petri 1561. Book
III ("Von dem Deutschen land"), pages
dcccccxxiii-dcccccxxiiii (923-4).
Sebastian
Münster (1488-1552) was a German cartographer, cosmographer, and
Hebrew scholar whose Cosmographia (1544; "Cosmography") was the earliest
German description of the world and a major work
- after the Nuremberg Chronicle of 1493 - in the revival of
geographic thought in 16th-century Europe. Altogether, about 40 editions of the
Cosmographia appeared during 1544-1628.
Although other cosmographies predate Münster's, he is given
first place in historical discussions of this sort of publication, and
was a major influence on his subject for over 200 years.
Cosmographia contained not
only the latest maps and views of many well-known cities, but included
an encyclopaedic amount of detail about the known - and unknown - world
and undoubtedly must have been one of the most widely read books of its
time. Aside from the well-known maps and views present in the
Cosmographia (including
the first separate printed map of the Western Hemisphere),
the text is thickly sprinkled with vigorous woodcuts:
portraits of kings and princes, costumes and occupations, habits and
customs, flora and fauna, monsters and horrors.

This most interesting authentic
leaf from the 1561 German edition of Cosmographia is devoted to
Bavaria and Austria.
Page 923 talks abour Rhaetia, Vindelicia, Regensburg and Saint Albertus Magnus.
Rhaetia was an Ancient Roman province south of the Danube River. It
comprised parts of present-day Austria, Switzerland, and Germany.
Conquered by Rome in 15 BC, it became an important part of the empire
for its position on the highways between Italy and the Danube and
between Gaul and the Balkans.
Albertus Magnus (1200-1280) was a dominican bishop.
He was the most prolific writer of his century and
was the only scholar of his age to be called "the Great"; this title was
used even before his death.
Pages 923 (bottom) and 924 (top) give a short description of Passau ("Batavia"),
city in Bavaria, at the
confluence of the Danube, Inn, and Ilz rivers, on the Austrian border.
Originating as the Celtic settlement of Bojodurum, it was later the site
of a Roman camp, Castra Batava, and was made an episcopal see in 739.
The bishops became princes of the Holy Roman Empire in 1217 and ruled
Passau until 1803.
The remaining part of the leaf deals with
Salzburg, city in north-central Austria. Salzburg was originally the site of a Celtic settlement and later of
the Roman town of Juvavum. Its archbishops were acknowledged as princes of
the Holy Roman Empire in 1278, and the city became the seat of their powerful
ecclesiastical principality.
The leaf contains three woodcut pictures:
-
A bridge across the Danube
-
View of Passau
-
View of Salzburg

This is a rare and exceptionally interesting historical
document that
will look great with a mat and frame.
