Double Page Folio Map; Superb Engraving
This map comes from first edition of the 'Atlas Universel...', by
Edme Mentelle and Pierre Grégoire Chanlaire
published in Paris during the French Revolution in
1797/8 (An six de la République; according to the French Revolutionary calendar).
Plate No. 12.
Edme Mentelle (1730-1815) was a
historian, geographer, and editor, active in Paris, Cour du Louvre, 7.
He was a head of the French Academy's section of Geography.
Mentelle was well known in his own time as a Voltairean historian who
wrote treatises promoting the Enlightenment for young readers.
Known for his manipulation of both politics and science,
Mentelle was in turn an enthusiastic supporter of the Republic, of
Napoleon, and of Louis XVIII, from whom he received the Cross of the
Legion of Honour.
Pierre Grégoire Chanlaire (1758-1817)
was a cartographer and editor,
active in Paris, rue Geoffroy-Langevin 328.
The map was engraved by
Pierre François Tardieu (1752-1798),
a member of a French family of notable engravers.

The copper mines of Falum and
the Sala silver mine are marked.
The town of Falun is known to have existed in the 14th century as a
market place for the surrounding lands. Mining for copper had been a
local business since the mid-1200s and the organisation for the
extracting of copper and gold from the Great Copper Mountain (Stora
Kopparberg) is believed to be the oldest still existing enterprise in
the world, proved active since 1347.
The historical silver mine of Sala
dates back to at least Medieval times, and was in operation until 1908.
This copperplate folio map is 12.7 x 16.9 inches on 17.1 x 21.7
inches sheet. Wide margins.
One centerfold, as issued. Printed on watermarked laid paper, clear plate mark.
Excellent sharp image. The condition is
good. Imperfections: age toning; one
tiny thinning; a smudge and a faint brownish spot; faint vertical folds.
Will look great with a mat and frame.
